New sugarcane variety sells out in five minutes in Uttar Pradesh
A new sugarcane variety called CoS.23232 has been developed for farmers in Uttar Pradesh, India.
The state’s sugarcane research council offered two lakh planting buds for online booking on October 9, and they were all booked in five minutes.
The variety was developed over about a decade and tested before being made available to farmers.
It is intended to mature sooner than some varieties and could produce about 10 percent more weight per unit of cane, according to the council’s extension officer.
Its canes are also described as long and thick, with a higher sugar content.
Farmers may use it as an alternative to the widely grown Co.0238 variety.
The council is increasing planting-material production using single-bud and tissue-culture methods, and is preparing a farmers’ fair where mini seed kits may be distributed.
Uttar Pradesh’s new sugarcane variety CoS.23232 sold out its online allocation of 200,000 buds within five minutes.
