Takeover of Kochi apartment towers remains uncertain despite ultimatum
The takeover of towers B and C at the Chander Kunj Army apartment complex in Vyttila, Kochi, remains uncertain.
The Kerala High Court directed the formation of a district committee to oversee the apartments’ demolition and reconstruction.
The committee set October 5 for the start of the handover, but the Army Welfare Housing Organisation (AWHO) did not attend that day.
Owners are expected to hand over their keys with an affidavit confirming AWHO’s undertaking to provide rebuilt apartments, after which the organisation must transfer the apartments to the district administration for demolition.
The District Collector then told AWHO to begin the process by October 12, but owners said they had received no notice from the organisation.
The committee had planned to finish the handover within two weeks, and owners have called for the Disaster Management Act to be used to ensure compliance.
A sub-committee meeting is scheduled for October 12 to discuss the demolition contract and the appointment of a project management consultant.
