India releases youth movement leaders after protests over voter list changes

Three leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party, a youth protest movement in India, were released on Sunday after police detained them in Delhi the day before.

The group had planned a major rally at Jantar Mantar to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The dispute centres on a nationwide revision of voter lists that has removed more than 130 million names, though one account gives a figure of more than 133 million.

Election authorities say the changes remove duplicate, deceased and ineligible entries, while critics say minorities may be disproportionately affected and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party could benefit.

The party and the Election Commission deny manipulating the process.

Police detained thousands of people in Delhi, and smaller protests there and in other cities were broken up on Sunday.

The movement and opposition leaders say protests will continue, while the three released leaders were told to maintain peace for a year.
