Delhi removes Jantar Mantar as protest site and names three alternatives
Delhi Police has announced that Jantar Mantar is no longer a designated place for protests and demonstrations.
The decision followed recommendations from a committee formed by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs to consider alternative venues.
The new sites are Ramlila Ground in Central Delhi, Burari Ground in North Delhi and CBD Ground in East Delhi.
The change partially modifies an earlier police order from April 2022.
The police say they will issue revised rules for organising protests at the three locations separately.
The change comes amid heightened security in the capital and protests over alleged irregularities in electoral roll revisions, with demonstrators calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign.
