Mexico’s human rights commission urges Jalisco to protect protest rights

A protest over the right to water took place in Jalisco, Mexico, on October 11, 2026.

Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission said it was concerned about the use of force to disperse the demonstration.

It urged the Jalisco government to protect people’s rights to protest, speak freely, gather and form associations.

The commission said security forces must act lawfully and use only necessary and proportionate measures, while protecting people’s safety.

Jalisco’s state human rights commission is following the case and supporting detained people.

It has issued precautionary measures to help ensure they receive medical care and have their rights respected.

The national commission offered to cooperate if asked.
