Michoacán tribunal rules Noroña did not commit gender-based political violence
A state electoral tribunal in Michoacán has ruled that Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña did not commit gender-based political violence against Uruapan Mayor Grecia Quiroz.
The decision reverses a ruling from July, when the tribunal found he had committed violence and added him to a national register of offenders.
The case concerned Noroña’s comments that Quiroz might campaign to become governor after her husband, Carlos Manzo, was killed.
The tribunal said the comments were protected by parliamentary immunity and political debate.
Noroña welcomed the new decision.
He has also said Quiroz could face prison if she does not hand over Manzo’s phones, which investigators are seeking.
Quiroz says she is being persecuted and has called for Mexico’s federal prosecutor’s office to take over the murder investigation.
