13.4 million people in Mexico moved out of poverty from 2018 to 2024

Mexico’s poverty rate fell between 2018 and 2024, and 13.4 million people moved out of poverty, according to the country’s statistics agency, Inegi.

The number of people in poverty dropped from 51.9 million to 38.5 million, or 29.6% of the population.

The period covers the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, whose Morena government raised the minimum wage and expanded social support programs.

Morena began as a political movement in 2011 and became a registered national party in 2014.

The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean said Mexico accounted for 60% of the region’s poverty reduction in 2024 and 49% of its reduction in extreme poverty.

Wage trends, employment and social transfers have all been identified as relevant to the changes, so the decline cannot be attributed to one factor alone.

President Claudia Sheinbaum, who took office in October 2024, is continuing the social policy approach; the 2026 federal budget includes more than one trillion pesos for welfare programs, with projected coverage of about 42.8 million people.
