Mexico’s Senate Extends Review of Proposed Femicide Law

Mexico’s Senate has given its committees more time to review a proposed national law on femicide, the killing of women because of their gender.

The bill would set rules for preventing, investigating and punishing the crime across Mexico.

The Senate’s president, Higinio Martínez, said the extension followed a request from the head of its Gender Equality Commission.

The request was made to continue discussions with victims, specialists and civil society groups.

Committees are also considering three other proposals alongside one introduced by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Martínez said the discussions had raised issues that need more analysis, and argued that listening to affected people would help make the law effective.

The committees will continue their discussions before deciding on the bill; the Senate’s usual deadline for this kind of review is 30 working days.
