Mexico’s Green Party backs Santiago Nieto for Querétaro governor
Mexico’s Green Party has backed Santiago Nieto, of the Morena party, as a candidate for governor of Querétaro.
The decision came after the Green Party had sought a new survey comparing Nieto with its own contender, federal lawmaker Ricardo Astudillo.
The parties say they want to pursue a joint candidacy, though they are not due to submit a formal coalition agreement in Querétaro until January 2027.
Nieto said the parties need to work together to challenge the National Action Party, which holds the governorship.
He pointed to their failure to form an alliance in 2024, which he said cost them several positions.
Nieto and Astudillo are also expected to meet with groups in the state, starting with business representatives.
The joint effort is still to be formalized through the coalition process.
