Sheinbaum says security will be strengthened after deadly Mazatlán prison clash

A clash at El Castillo prison in Mazatlán, in Mexico’s Sinaloa state, left 10 people dead and 16 injured.

It happened on Thursday, which was also a visiting day at the prison.

President Claudia Sheinbaum said the federal Security Cabinet is working with Sinaloa authorities to strengthen security across the prison system.

She said investigations are under way to establish why the clash happened.

Authorities are also providing support to victims’ families.

One account says the violence targeted a man identified as a member of the Los Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, but the investigation into the cause is continuing.

The state governor is expected to provide further information.
