Bolsonaro-aligned politicians set to govern seven Brazilian Amazon states

Politicians aligned with Flávio Bolsonaro are set to govern seven of Brazil’s nine Amazon states after the first round of state elections.

Brazil’s Amazon region includes states where decisions about land, mining and natural resources affect Indigenous and other local communities.

The Oct.

25 runoff will decide the governors of Amazonas, Acre and Tocantins, as well as the presidential contest between incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro.

In Acre and Tocantins, both candidates for governor support Flávio Bolsonaro, while in Amazonas, Lula-allied candidate Omar Aziz led the first-round vote.

Environmental and Indigenous advocates warn that political changes could weaken control over illegal activity and natural-resource exploitation, as they say happened under Jair Bolsonaro’s 2019-2022 government.

Indigenous, quilombola and riverside communities could be among the first affected, according to Brazil’s Indigenous peoples minister.
