Business group urges better IMSS care as workers protest
The head of Mexico’s Business Coordinating Council said companies pay their contributions to the Mexican Social Security Institute, known as the IMSS, on time.
He said workers covered by the system face problems including medicine shortages and surgeries delayed because necessary equipment is unavailable.
Some patients, he said, have waited six months for surgery, only for it to be postponed.
The comments come amid nationwide mobilizations by IMSS staff over their working conditions.
Council leader Medina Mora said the government should listen to staff and reach an appropriate negotiation, while also improving care for workers insured through their employers.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said the staff’s demands were legitimate and said she had spoken with IMSS director Zoé Robledo about addressing the conflict.
Medina Mora also said businesses should help expand prevention efforts to reduce the need for treatment.
Mexico’s business group CCE urged the government to improve care for workers covered by the IMSS social security system.
CCE president Medina Mora said patients have faced long waits for surgery and procedures postponed because equipment was unavailable.
He said some workers have had to buy medicines themselves because of shortages.
Medina Mora also called for IMSS staff demands to be heard and negotiated.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said she was confident the institute’s problems and its workers’ legitimate demands would be addressed.

What people are saying
From the business sector, we have pointed out deficiencies in the IMSS in the treatment of our workers.
The focus from the company is the provision of services to our workers, which has become less efficient.
It is important that workers are heard and that an adequate negotiation is reached.
I am confident that the problems and legitimate demands will be addressed.
