San Pablo project proposes 13,000 lower-cost homes in Los Cabos

The San Pablo project proposes 13,000 homes in San José del Cabo, in the municipality of Los Cabos, Baja California Sur.

The homes would average 627,000 pesos and be at least 60 square metres, far below the current 1.5 million to 2.5 million peso cost of social housing in Los Cabos.

The project is part of the federal Vivienda para el Bienestar program and is intended for Infonavit-eligible workers, including people earning one to two minimum wages.

It has 120 hectares of land acquired from the San José del Cabo ejido, addressing a shortage of public land that has held back housing construction in the area.

The need is urgent: an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 people in Los Cabos live in informal settlements or areas at risk of flooding, while families continue to arrive.

The project could house about 75,000 people and represents roughly one in four homes planned for Baja California Sur under the program.

The Los Cabos council must approve the master plan before the development can proceed; it will set land uses and address infrastructure such as water, drainage, electricity and transport.
