Tamil Nadu revises school timetable to include daily physical activity
Tamil Nadu has announced a revised timetable for state-board schools for students in grades 1 to 12.
Physical education is compulsory three days a week for grades 1–10 and two days a week for grades 11 and 12.
The timetable also includes two periods for extracurricular activities, which can be changed to physical education if needed.
This means students may have physical activity every school day, though the number of compulsory physical education periods varies by grade.
The changes also give more time to Tamil and English, and an extra period to mathematics and science.
Schools are scheduled to run from 9:30 a.m.
to 4:10 p.m., with lesson periods lasting 90 minutes for grades 1–5 and 45 minutes for grades 6–10.
The minister said schools must not skip physical education and should encourage students to play without discrimination based on caste or religion; the government also plans to fill physical education teacher vacancies.
Tamil Nadu has revised the timetable for students following the state curriculum to give greater importance to physical education and online education.
School Education Minister Rajmohan said physical education classes would be held across five days, with some extracurricular periods available for them.
