Sun’s erratic mass loss may destabilize outer planets sooner than expected
As the Sun ages, it is expected to lose much of its mass.
A new study suggests that this may happen in many uneven bursts, rather than smoothly.
The changing force of the Sun’s gravity could push the outer planets into crossing orbits.
In some simulations, planets such as Saturn were even ejected from the Solar System.
