Camera captures aurora over parts of the Netherlands

The northern lights appeared overnight in parts of the Netherlands, but people could barely see them without a camera.

The southern half of the country had the best chance to capture them because skies were less cloudy there.

Photos came from Limburg, South Holland and Gelderland.

The coloured glow is caused by a solar storm, when electrically charged particles from the Sun release energy in the sky.

The aurora has appeared in the Netherlands several times in recent years during a period of high solar activity.

That activity is expected to decline in the coming years, making sightings less likely.

Around 2030, the chance of seeing the northern lights in the Netherlands is expected to be very small.
