TVK wins Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly by-elections

TVK wins Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly by-elections

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, won by-elections in Madurantakam and Dharapuram on October 9, 2026.

Maragatham Kumaravel won Madurantakam with 74,048 votes, while P. Sathyabama won Dharapuram with 66,841.

Both candidates had won those seats for the AIADMK in the 2026 Assembly election, then resigned as legislators and joined TVK.

Their departures led to the by-elections, which tested TVK’s popularity after it came to power in May.

The wins add two seats to TVK’s strength in the 234-member Assembly.

TVK has 107 legislators, below the 118 needed for a majority, and relies on support from other parties.

Five more Assembly by-elections are expected, according to one account.
