Delhi detains protest leaders as youth rally challenges voter-list changes
Police in New Delhi detained Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke and scores of protesters on October 10, ahead of a planned youth rally.
The protesters wanted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign over changes to voter lists.
Critics say the revisions favour Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, but the Election Commission and the party deny the allegations.
Reports said about 130 million voter names were removed during the process.
Authorities deployed thousands of security personnel, closed some metro stations and suspended mobile internet as they tried to prevent the rally from going ahead.
Police said they had not approved it because organisers applied too late.
The dispute adds to pressure on Modi’s government ahead of important state elections scheduled to begin in early 2027.
