Family says it cannot reach detained CJP founder as grandmother’s rites are delayed
Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, was detained by Delhi Police in New Delhi on Saturday.
He had travelled from Mumbai with party colleagues for a planned protest seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged problems with electoral rolls.
His grandmother, Savitribai Shankarrao Dipke, died at her home in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district after a prolonged illness.
Delhi Police says it told Dipke about her death and offered help for him to travel home.
His mother, Anita Dipke, says the family has been unable to contact him and disputes the police account.
The family postponed the last rites, which had been scheduled for Sunday morning, until he could return.
An Executive Magistrate ordered Dipke and two other party leaders released after their preventive detention, but the accounts do not say whether he had returned home.
Abhijeet Dipke’s mother said the family could not contact him while he was detained in Delhi and accused police of lying about telling him of his grandmother’s death.
She said the family had put the last rites on hold until he could return.
Delhi Police said it had informed Dipke of the death and offered help for his journey home.
Dipke and two other Cockroach Janta Party leaders were detained ahead of a planned protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
An Executive Magistrate ordered the release of the three leaders, according to the Times of India.

Anita Dipke said the family could not contact Dipke and accused police of lying about informing him. The party questioned Dipke’s whereabouts and said his family wanted to speak with him.
