India detains thousands as Delhi blocks protest calling for election chief to resign
Indian authorities detained more than 2,000 people in Delhi on October 10 as they moved to stop a protest calling for chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign.
The demonstration was organised by the Cockroach youth movement, whose leaders were among those detained.
Police and paramilitary forces sealed off parts of the capital, suspended mobile internet in the central business district and closed metro stations and markets.
The protesters object to a revision of voter lists, which critics say could benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
A separate report said the revision removed about 130 million voter names, and opposition parties have raised concerns about the process.
India’s UN mission said restrictions on assembly were reasonable measures to protect public order, while the UN human rights office called for peaceful assembly to be respected.
The movement said it would continue protesting until Kumar resigns.
