Belichick misses Patriots’ celebration of their first Super Bowl team

The New England Patriots celebrated the 25th anniversary of their 2001 Super Bowl win at a game on Sunday.

Former coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady were not there; Brady was working in Seattle.

Belichick now coaches the University of North Carolina team and had recently attended a reunion for the New York Giants’ 1986 Super Bowl team.

The 2001 Patriots won the franchise’s first Super Bowl after starting the season 0-2, then finishing 11-5 and winning three playoff games.

That championship began a successful 23-season partnership between Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft, during which the team won six Super Bowls.

Their relationship has since become strained, and Belichick has publicly criticized how his departure after the 2023 season was handled.

The team may hold more anniversary celebrations, including one for its 2003 team in 2028, and Kraft has mentioned the possibility of a statue honoring Belichick.
