Indonesia receives first shipment of live buffalo from Australia

Indonesia’s state-owned livestock company, PT Berdikari, received its first shipment of live buffalo from Australia on October 11.

The company says it is adding buffalo as an alternative source of animal protein while live cattle prices are high.

Berdikari says the buffalo are meant to complement, not replace, cattle or the output of local farmers.

The company hopes the additional supply will give consumers more choice and help make meat prices more affordable.

It also says diversifying supply could help balance the market and strengthen national food security.

Berdikari says it will now face the challenge of developing this new part of its business.

The company has not given details of further shipments.
