Village cooperative helps Pasuruan mango pickle seller double sales

Anita Kurniawati makes mango pickles in Wonokerto village, in Pasuruan regency, Indonesia.

She uses lower-priced mango varieties to make a product that can sell for more than the fresh fruit.

Her small, home-based business operates mainly during the mango harvest season, from August to December.

She sells each 250-gram pack for 10,000 rupiah and says sales have risen from about 40 packs to 80 since she started supplying the village cooperative.

The cooperative sells the packs on consignment, paying Anita for those sold and returning any that remain unsold.

Its manager says the pickles sometimes sell out in about three days.

The new sales channel gives Anita access to customers beyond her usual local network.
