Indian Coast Guard seizes boat over suspected diesel smuggling off Mumbai

The Indian Coast Guard seized a fishing boat and detained seven crew members off the Mumbai coast on Monday, October 12.

The boat, named Haridwar Krupa, was suspected of smuggling diesel at sea.

The Coast Guard said the boat ignored warnings and tried to flee when challenged near Prongs Lighthouse.

During a preliminary investigation, its captain said the crew had received about 4,000 litres of illicit diesel at sea.

The crew also reportedly dumped around 500 litres overboard during the chase, and officers seized documents and six phones.

The boat and crew were taken to Mumbai Harbour for a joint investigation by several agencies, including the Coast Guard, Navy, State Intelligence Bureau and police.
