IMSS to decide on union pay offer after Oct. 14 vote
Mexico’s Social Security Institute, known as IMSS, is waiting for a union vote on a proposed pay deal.
The National Union of Social Security Workers will hold the vote on October 14.
The deal approved so far is a 6.8% raise, while some workers have asked for a 10% increase.
IMSS director Zoé Robledo said the institute will decide how to respond after the vote.
The institute is also starting an internal review of medicine and medical-supply shortages, staffing and working conditions.
The review will begin at large specialty units, then move to regional hospitals, with no dates given.
Robledo said some suppliers had failed to deliver medicines and that IMSS has begun ending contracts with companies that did not meet their obligations.
IMSS director Zoé Robledo said the institute will respond to a union salary consultation after workers vote on October 14.
The consultation will help determine whether IMSS grants a pay increase or keeps the previously approved 6.8% offer.
Workers who have protested in several states are seeking a 10% salary increase.
Robledo did not say whether IMSS has enough funds to grant the requested increase or how much more it might offer.
IMSS also announced an internal review of medicine and supply shortages, staffing and working conditions, without giving dates.
