Mexico remittances fall 3.6% in August as purchasing power declines
Remittances are money sent home by people living abroad.
Mexico received $5.452 billion in August, 3.6% less than in August the previous year and 2.1% less than in July.
From January through August, however, the total was $41.802 billion, above the $40.903 billion received in the same period a year earlier.
The money supports about 4.8 million Mexican families, but inflation and exchange-rate changes meant recipients had 14.7% less purchasing power in pesos in August than a year before.
The decline in purchasing power had continued for 15 months.
Experts expect remittances to remain high and support household spending, but to gradually moderate.
They also warn that an aging Mexican migrant community in the United States and a lower tendency to send money could affect transfers in coming years.
