India’s chief justice intervenes to secure release of detained lawyers
Several lawyers, including women advocates, were detained by Delhi Police while peacefully protesting near India’s Supreme Court in Delhi.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant contacted government authorities after the Supreme Court Bar Association asked him to intervene.
The lawyers were released, according to the association.
Their protest took place amid heightened security ahead of a demonstration called by the Cockroach Janata Party and other groups.
The groups are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.
A day earlier, the Supreme Court had said authorities could regulate public transport for security but should not shut it down completely.
The court directed officials to allow metro and rail services to operate in a suitable, regulated way and to publish updated travel advisories.
