Mexico requires disabled mobile lines to receive emergency call-backs
Mexico’s Telecommunications Regulatory Commission has ruled that mobile lines disabled for missing mandatory registration must still be able to receive calls from emergency centers.
The rule covers calls from services including 911, 088, 089, 074 and 079.
Mobile operator Altán Redes asked the regulator to clarify the rules after raising concerns that emergency calls might be interrupted if a center tried to call someone back.
Emergency centers may need to call from a different number than the one a person originally dialed.
The regulator said blocking those return calls would undermine emergency services.
Telecom providers and resellers must allow the calls free of charge, even when a line is restricted or disabled.
This does not restore general voice, data or text messaging service to the line.
