BJP wins Assam’s Nagaon parliamentary by-election after seven years

The BJP has won the Nagaon seat in Assam for the first time since 2019.

Its candidate, Devasish Sharma, defeated AIUDF chief Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal by 141,916 votes.

Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora came third.

The result matters because Nagaon’s boundaries changed in 2023, and the BJP said it gained support in areas with many Muslim voters.
