Ruling parties win all six by-elections across four regions
Ruling parties won all six by-elections held across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Assam.
The BJP took both West Bengal Assembly seats, Nandigram and Rejinagar, and won the Nagaon seat in Assam’s national Parliament.
In Tamil Nadu, the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, or TVK, won two Assembly seats and increased its total to 109 in the 234-seat House.
The wins were an early electoral test for TVK after it came to power in May.
Its candidates had previously won the seats for the AIADMK, then resigned and joined TVK.
In Puducherry, the ruling All India NR Congress retained the Thattanchavady seat.
The results add seats to the governing parties, though Tamil Nadu’s Assembly still has five vacant seats and an effective majority of 115.
The BJP won both West Bengal Assembly bypolls, in Nandigram and Rejinagar.
Ruling parties also won the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam, two Tamil Nadu Assembly seats and a Puducherry Assembly seat.
