ITA plans Rome–Lima flights as Emirates seeks Milan route approval

ITA Airways is preparing a direct route from Rome Fiumicino to Lima, possibly starting in the next summer season.

The move comes as Emirates seeks approval to carry passengers between Milan Malpensa and Lima.

This type of service is allowed under “fifth freedom” rules, which let an airline fly between two foreign countries as part of a route that begins or ends in its home country.

Italy’s aviation regulator, Enac, has not yet issued its final approval for Emirates’ proposed route.

People familiar with the plans say Emirates could instead move the Lima service to Barcelona if permission is denied.

ITA is also working toward starting flights from Rome to Caracas, which were delayed after an earthquake in Venezuela.

The Lima decision matters to plans for airline growth in Italy, and Lufthansa is due to raise its stake in ITA to 90% in early 2027.
