Thieves steal 30,000 bottles worth €5 million from Antinori winery

Thieves stole 30,000 bottles of wine worth about €5 million from a Marchesi Antinori storage site in Cortona, Tuscany.

The haul included the winery’s Solaia, Tignanello and Guado al Tasso wines.

Antinori said at least seven masked people disabled the alarm and used two trucks to take the bottles overnight.

Staff discovered the theft on Monday morning, and police are investigating; no arrests have been made.

The company says the stolen wines were due to be shipped to customers abroad.

Antinori is alerting customers and asking wine buyers to be wary of bottles offered through unusual channels or at tempting prices.

The winery hopes the warning will help locate the bottles and prevent their sale as stolen goods.

Italy has seen other large wine thefts in recent months, but Antinori’s says this haul is unusually large in both volume and value.
