Villa Franciacorta targets Asian and Mexican markets after heat-hit harvest
Villa Franciacorta, based in Monticelli Brusati in Italy’s Franciacorta wine region, says this year’s harvest should produce a strong vintage despite unusually hot weather.
The winery says its vines’ position near the hills helped keep temperatures cooler at night, and workers picked grapes in the early morning or evening to avoid the hottest hours.
Since 1978, Villa has made only vintage-dated Franciacorta wines, using grapes from its own vineyards.
It produces about 250,000 bottles a year and exports around 25% of them.
Switzerland and Japan are established markets, while the winery has recently developed sales channels in Vietnam, Thailand and Mexico.
The expansion reflects growing demand through fine dining and international tourism in those markets.
The University of Florence will work with the winery during early winemaking to test selected local yeasts.
