Chennai Metro Phase II stretch to open as Modi visits the city
A 15-kilometre stretch of Chennai Metro Phase II, between Poonamallee and Vadapalani, is set to open to passengers on October 11, 2026.
The project is in Chennai, the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
Construction began six years ago, and the opening is the first part of the Phase II network to serve commuters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the stretch and travel with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay from Poonamallee to Porur Bypass.
Modi is also set to launch or lay foundation stones for development projects worth more than ₹13,000 crore across transport, energy and research.
These include highway and railway works, port infrastructure and a project at the Chennai Petroleum Corporation refinery.
Police have announced heavy security, traffic diversions and restrictions on drones during the visit.
The stretch is due to open to commuters on Sunday, but the sources do not give details of further Phase II opening dates.
