Mexico City opens $190 million community center in Milpa Alta

Mexico City officials have opened UTOPÍA Temictli Tecómitl in San Antonio Tecómitl, in the borough of Milpa Alta.

The city spent 190 million pesos to convert the site of a local sports center into a complex with 11 buildings.

It offers more than 80 free activities and services, including childcare, a day center, a swimming pool and health facilities.

The city says the complex is expected to benefit more than 18,000 residents.

It is part of a public care system intended to make care services more accessible and share unpaid care work.

This is the ninth UTOPÍA complex opened under the current city administration, which has a goal of opening more than 100.

Mayor Clara Brugada also announced plans for a Cablebús route from Tecómitl to Metro Tláhuac and road paving between towns in Milpa Alta.
