Senate committees approve limits on students’ cellphone use in Mexico
Two committees in Mexico’s Senate unanimously approved a proposed change to the General Education Law on personal devices in schools.
The measure covers public and private schools across the national education system.
In early childhood, preschool, primary and secondary education, students would generally be barred from using phones and other personal devices during the school day.
Use would be allowed for planned educational activities and for emergencies, health needs, disability, accessibility, inclusion or other particular circumstances.
In upper secondary education, schools would limit non-educational use according to their context and agreements with the school community.
In higher education, communities would set agreements while promoting responsible use and respecting university autonomy.
The committees said the goal is to help students focus, learn and interact, while keeping technology in service of learning.
