Rising food prices push more than 16% of Tuscan families to cut back

More than 16% of families in Tuscany have reduced what they buy of basic foods, especially meat and fish.

The figures come from estimates by Federconsumatori, a consumer association.

Over the past year, fruit and vegetable prices in the region rose by 12%, while cherry tomatoes rose by more than 50%.

Florence has the highest estimated increase in grocery costs, at €778 per household a year; Lucca and Siena follow.

Higher transport costs and climate-related problems affecting farms are among the causes cited.

Some people are choosing discounted products, cheaper cuts of meat or smaller quantities.

Federconsumatori is calling for lower fuel taxes and changes to VAT on basic goods, which it estimates could save families more than €600 a year.
