Faint but clear northern lights appear over parts of Switzerland
Faint but clearly visible northern lights appeared in several parts of Switzerland on Saturday evening.
Meteorologist Daniel Gerstgrasser confirmed that the lights could be seen, including on some weather webcams.
Northern lights form when charged particles from the solar wind meet gases in Earth’s atmosphere.
They are more likely when the Sun is especially active.
The colors depend on which atmospheric gases the particles meet and how high the light forms.
More energetic solar wind can produce a wider range of colors, so the display can reveal information about the conditions in the atmosphere.

The auroras form when charged particles from the solar wind meet gases in Earth’s atmosphere.
Their colours depend on atmospheric gases and the height at which the lights occur.
