Residents in Sakarya Join Effort Against Stink Bugs Seeking Winter Shelter
In Kocaali, a district in Turkey’s Sakarya province, residents are joining a campaign against brown marmorated stink bugs.
As the weather cools, the insects move into enclosed places such as homes to spend the winter.
The pest has been especially active in summer and can damage hazelnuts and other farm production.
With the district agriculture office coordinating, residents in five neighborhoods sprayed around homes, roof spaces, windows and farm buildings.
Officials said people should focus on outdoor areas and avoid contact between pesticide and living spaces.
Residents said the insects are still appearing after earlier spraying, so a single treatment may not be enough.
The campaign is continuing, with officials and residents calling for repeated, coordinated efforts.
Residents in five Kocaali neighborhoods sprayed homes and agricultural areas to combat brown marmorated stink bugs seeking shelter for winter.
The effort was coordinated by the Kocaali District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, which supplied the pesticide.
Residents treated areas including roof spaces, door and window edges, structures in hazelnut orchards and places where the pest was frequently seen.
District director Burak Bilgin said collective action was important as cooler weather drove the insects into enclosed spaces.
Residents and officials said the effort would need to continue, as a single round of spraying might not be enough.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
This year too, the brown marmorated stink bug has started coming into homes, which we call wintering sites.
We spoke with our District Agriculture and Forestry Director and obtained our pesticides. We, as the village residents, came together. We will spray our neighborhood together and fight this pest.
We are trying to find a solution by spraying, but this is not something that can be done in 1-2 days. We need to fight continuously and together.
I think one-time spraying is not enough. These efforts need to continue regularly.

Demiraçma residents contacted the district directorate, obtained pesticide and organized residents.
