Mexico’s electoral council defends changes overturned by tribunal
Mexico’s National Electoral Institute, known as the INE, is preparing rules for the 2027 election.
Its president, Guadalupe Taddei, and other council members defended changes approved by a majority, even though the country’s top electoral tribunal has overturned some of them in recent weeks.
Political party representatives criticized the changes, saying they were made without consensus or dialogue with the parties.
One overturned decision concerned the exclusion of parties from a commission that checks candidates’ integrity.
Taddei said court review is part of the electoral system and does not mean the INE’s entire work was wrong.
The council members said the INE will keep making decisions and will follow the tribunal’s rulings when it confirms or changes them.
INE President Guadalupe Taddei and two councillors defended electoral changes that Mexico’s Electoral Tribunal had overturned.
Taddei said court review is part of the electoral appeals system and does not amount to a general rejection of the INE’s work.
Councillor Arturo Chávez said the tribunal does not simply “correct” the INE and defended decisions made by majority vote.

I do not agree with attempts to present this ruling as a general disqualification of the work of the National Electoral Institute because in our democratic system, the decisions of electoral authorities are subject to judicial review; that is precisely the purpose of the system of remedies.
Anyone who believes that the law is the law has an authoritarian mindset.
The Tribunal does not correct anyone, as certain sensationalist propaganda says, nor does it give gold stars when it upholds a decision.
