Anthropic updates Claude rules on elections, weapons and surveillance
Anthropic has updated the rules for how people can use its AI chatbot, Claude.
The rules ban using it for deceptive campaigns, voter misinformation, weapons development and some forms of surveillance.
They also set safety requirements for hardware that Claude can control.
The changes make clearer what the company says users must not do.
Anthropic’s revised usage policy for Claude takes effect on November 12.
Anthropic said most changes are intended to clarify rules that already existed.
The policy adds a section barring deceptive campaigns, including fake accounts, misleading messages, and tools for influence operations.
The revised elections rules prohibit using Claude to deceive voters or disrupt elections, including by spreading false or misleading political information.
The policy explicitly bars using Claude to develop weapon software or components, arm drones, conduct non-consensual surveillance, or recommend people for investigation, arrest, or charges.
For Claude-connected hardware capable of physical actions that might cause injury, the policy requires a qualified operator to be able to observe and stop the equipment.
