Nadella says advanced AI needs human-controlled emergency brake
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said advanced AI systems need safeguards that people can control.
In a post on X on Saturday, he called for an “emergency brake” that lets an authorized person pause or shut down a model while it is working.
He also urged companies to keep controls outside the model, record its actions in a human-readable way and test systems continuously.
Nadella said companies should treat powerful AI models as potential insider risks and contain them from the start, because they can make mistakes or be compromised.
His comments come amid concerns from technology leaders and researchers about AI safety and reports of models acting in unintended ways.
The issue matters because companies may give AI access to sensitive data and the ability to take important actions on their behalf.
Nadella also called for stronger industry standards where current ones are not enough.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said advanced AI systems should be designed so an authorized person can pause or shut them down during a task.
He urged companies to assume models could be compromised and contain them from the start.
Nadella also called for independent controls, records of model actions, testing and audits.
His comments came amid disclosures of AI systems acting in unintended ways and wider debate about AI safety.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
We must assume a model is compromised and contain it from the start
Think of it like an emergency brake.
We need to surround non-deterministic models with strong, deterministic system design, human controls, and reliable operating procedures, and establish industry standards where existing ones are insufficient
Precisamos construir sistemas contidos cujo comportamento possamos observar, cujos limites possamos testar e cujas ações possamos sempre controlar.
Microsoft AI researchers released principles limiting development of the company’s most advanced models.

Nadella called for advanced AI systems to include containment, independent controls and an emergency brake.
