UK privacy watchdog secures data protection commitments from 10 AI companies

The UK's Information Commissioner's Office has secured data protection commitments from 10 major AI companies.

They include Amazon, Anthropic, Apple, Cohere, DeepSeek, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Stability AI.

The companies have agreed to improve transparency, strengthen ways for users to exercise their rights and assess safeguards more rigorously.

The commitments follow an ICO report calling for clear policies and a lawful basis for using personal data to train AI models.

The regulator is also seeking evidence on data protection risks as AI systems become more autonomous.

It has opened an investigation into X.AI LLC over its Grok system and its potential to generate harmful content.

The ICO says AI autonomy does not reduce companies' data protection duties, and it is seeking public input on how risks are managed.
