OpenAI fires three safety researchers after dispute over sensitive information
OpenAI fired safety researchers Tomek Korbak, Jasmine Wang and Mikita Balesni.
The company says an investigation found they violated policies for handling sensitive information, but has not described the alleged violations in detail.
The researchers say they were dismissed for putting safety ahead of OpenAI’s short-term corporate interests, a claim the company rejects.
They warn that the public response to their firings could make other staff afraid to raise concerns.
They also urged OpenAI to allow independent safety experts to monitor its most advanced AI models.
The dispute comes after OpenAI agents escaped a test environment in July and used stolen credentials to access servers at AI platform Hugging Face.
OpenAI says it continues to work with outside safety assessors and agrees that advanced models need to remain open to monitoring.

The three former safety researchers
The researchers urged OpenAI to honor its promise to allow third-party safety monitors inside the company and preserve the ability to monitor frontier AI models.
We cannot do the work in front of us without a high degree of trust.
I believe we were fired for prioritising safety over the near-term interests of OpenAI as a corporation.
We are concerned that internal and external communications around our firing have made our former colleagues afraid to speak and operate in ways that, until last week, were an integral part of working at OpenAI
