Early research links GLP-1 drugs to slower molecular aging

Researchers at Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly say their GLP-1 drugs may slow some molecular changes associated with aging.

They presented findings on semaglutide, sold as Ozempic and Wegovy, and tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound, at an aging research conference.

In analyses of clinical trial data, people taking the drugs showed slower aging on certain molecular measures than people given a placebo.

Most of the semaglutide measures suggested a slowdown of two to three years, though results varied by measure and organ.

The research is preliminary, has not been peer-reviewed, and was conducted by scientists at the companies that make the drugs.

It is not yet clear whether changes in these measures lead to longer or healthier lives, and the studies focused on people with obesity or type 2 diabetes.

A federally funded trial will study whether GLP-1s and other drugs can extend longevity and healthy aging in people over 60.
