IMSS workers plan national march and demand transparent union elections
Workers at Mexico’s Social Security Institute, known as the IMSS, have agreed to hold a national march in Mexico City on Tuesday, Oct.
13.
It is due to start at 3 p.m.
at the main entrance to the Siglo XXI National Medical Center, while a sit-in on Paseo de la Reforma will continue.
The workers are demanding the removal of union leader Rafael Olivos and an extraordinary union congress with transparent elections.
They also want a 10% overall pay increase, a dignified retirement, and action to address shortages of medical supplies and medicines.
The union has proposed a 6.8% increase, which workers oppose, and a vote on that proposal is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct.

Workers say they want the ballots and voting process to be open to observation.
Olivos has called for dialogue, said there will be no reprisals for peaceful protest, and urged workers to take part in the pay vote.
