Korean container ship completes Arctic route round trip

The PanStar Ace returned to Busan after a 50-day round trip through the Arctic.

It left on August 22, sailed along the Northeast Passage and called at ports in Britain, the Netherlands and Poland.

This was the first round trip on the Arctic route by a Korean container ship.

The route connects Asia and Europe and has drawn attention as Arctic sea ice shrinks.

The ship arrived six days later than planned, but completed the voyage without a major incident.

South Korea’s government will study the voyage’s route, travel time, costs and fuel use to assess whether the route could work commercially.

It plans to build experience toward regular Arctic services by 2030 and larger container ships by around 2035.
