20 outage-prone financial firms spent less than 70% of security budgets

An analysis of data submitted to South Korea’s financial authorities found that 20 financial firms with frequent computer outages spent less than 70% of their information security budgets last year.

Together, the firms spent 305.03 billion won of their 438 billion won in planned security budgets, a rate of 69.6%.

Woori Bank had the lowest rate, spending 53.8% of its budget, while KB Kookmin Bank and Hanwha Life each spent 58.1%.

These firms hold customers’ money and sensitive personal information, so security spending helps protect financial services and customer trust.

Seven of the 20 firms also reduced their information security budgets this year compared with last year.

Woori Bank’s budget fell by 21.7%, the largest reduction listed.

A lawmaker called for financial authorities to review security spending and hold firms accountable where shortcomings are found; no further action was specified.
