South Korean container ship completes Northern Sea Route round trip

South Korea’s container ship PanStar Acro returned to Busan on October 11 after travelling along the Northern Sea Route.

It sailed from Busan on August 22, reached Felixstowe in the United Kingdom, and also called at Rotterdam and Gdansk before returning by the same route.

The roughly 50-day journey was the first commercial Northern Sea Route voyage by a container ship operated by a South Korean shipping company.

The vessel carried 737 standard container units of cargo, including chemical products, used cars and spare parts, as well as 100 empty containers.

The route is shorter between South Korea and Europe than the route through the Suez Canal; the distance from Busan to Rotterdam is about 35% less.

That could help exporters save up to 10 days, although this voyage returned six days later than originally planned.

South Korean shipping companies had not used the route since 2016.

An event marking the ship’s return is expected on October 13.
