South Korea introduces smartphone checks for counterfeit K-brand products
South Korea has introduced a government certification mark to help shoppers identify counterfeit Korean-brand products sold overseas.
The mark uses an AI digital watermark, a hidden feature designed to be difficult to copy.
Shoppers scan a QR code beside the mark with a smartphone, then scan the mark itself; no separate app is needed.
The screen says whether the product is genuine or suspected to be counterfeit, in one of 15 languages.
The system is intended to address the spread of fake products as Korean brands gain popularity around the world.
Thirty-one companies, including Samyang Foods, Amorepacific and Korea Ginseng Corp., have applied to use the mark.
The government plans to study scan data to identify where counterfeit products are circulating and work with local enforcement agencies.
